From Paris to Madrid: The Stars who've worn both shirts

As Paris Saint-Germain prepare to face Real Madrid in the Club World Cup semi-finals this week, we look back at the illustrious names who have bridged two of the biggest clubs in world football.

The rivalry between PSG and Real Madrid has taken on added weight over the past decade, with battles fought both on and off the pitch. In that time, several players have worn the colours of both clubs - the most high profile of course being Kylian Mbappé after his move to the Spanish side last summer. Here is a list of other players who have represented both clubs:

🇫🇷 Kylian Mbappé 

  • PSG Career (2017–2024): Bursting onto the scene from Monaco, Mbappé became PSG’s all-time leading scorer (256 goals in 308 matches), won six Ligue 1 titles, and reached a Champions League final
  • Real Madrid Move (July 2024): Joined on a free transfer, signing a five-year deal. Made his debut at the July 16, 2024 unveiling at the Bernabéu. Delivered strong performances during the 2024–25 season — matched club rookie records and took home the Pichichi and European Golden Shoe.
  • CWC 2025 Impact: Now fully settled in, Mbappé has returned to form. He scored in extra time during a 3–2 quarter-final win vs Dortmund. After recovering from a minor illness, he's set to feature in the semi-final against his former club.

🇫🇷 Nicolas Anelka

  • PSG: Youth product turned first-team star, debuting in 1996 before returning in 2000.
  • Real Madrid: Signed in 1999 for €35m. Despite a turbulent spell, scored crucial Champions League goals en route to the 2000 title.
  • Legacy: One of the first modern-era stars to connect the two clubs. 

🇫🇷 Claude Makélélé

  • Real Madrid: 2000–03 — became a key defensive pillar, winning 2 La Liga titles and the 2002 Champions League.

  • PSG: 2008–11 — returned home to wrap up his career, earning captaincy and becoming a fan favourite.

🇦🇷 Gabriel Heinze

  • PSG: 2001–04 — cemented his status as a no-nonsense defender.

  • Real Madrid: 2007–09 — earned a La Liga title before departure.

🇨🇷 Keylor Navas

  • Real Madrid: A three-time Champions League winner (2016–18), known for his heroics on the biggest stage.

  • PSG: Joined in 2019, instantly becoming a fan favourite with standout performances in Europe.

  • Legacy: A serial winner who brought elite-level experience to the PSG dressing room.

🇦🇷 Ángel Di María

  • Real Madrid: Instrumental in La Décima (2014), especially in the final.

  • PSG: Joined in 2015 and became one of the club’s all-time greats, scoring 93 goals in 295 matches and winning 18 trophies.

  • Legacy: A true bridge between the two clubs, adored in both white and Rouge et Bleu.

  • Real Madrid: A legendary captain, 22 major trophies, and 101 goals from defence.
