Angel Gomes is one of two new signings announced by Olympique de Marseille

Olympique de Marseille have made the first big splash of the summer transfer window, announcing the signings of both former LOSC Lille midfielder Angel Gomes and his countryman, former Burnley defender CJ Egan-Riley. Read on to learn more about both players, who will be excited to join Roberto de Zerbi's Champions League-bound side.

An England international...

A product of the Manchester United academy, the London-born Gomes had joined Les Dogues in the summer of 2020, having been out of contract. His first season at the club (or not with the club as the case may be) was spent on loan at Portuguese side Boavista, where he was a first team regular and scored six goals and added six assists, as the Porto-based side avoided relegation.

Back at Lille, he found game time hard to come by at times, but with the arrival of Paulo Fonseca to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, he became a regular starter, and continued to feature under Bruno Gรฉnรฉsio, becoming a key part of the team's possession-based approach, relying on his versatility and passing acumen. He even earned a handful of England caps earlier in the season, and while he was often under-used later in the season, he nevertheless has impressed in his time in Ligue 1 and will be eager to continue to show that, joining a talented Marseille midfield that already includes the likes of Adrien Rabiot and Valentin Rongier.

...and one for the future!

Gomes will be joined at the Stade Vรฉlodrรดme by another promising Englishman (also on a free transfer), CJ Egan-Riley. A longtime regular for his country at youth levels, he is a product of the Manchester City academy. After joining Burnley on loan in 2022, he spent time on loan with both PSV Eindhoven and Scottish side Hibernian before establishing himself as a regular last years as the Clarets won promotion from the English second division. A right-footed centre back, he'll be expected to complement captain Leonardo Balerdi in defence as the club make their return to Europe's marquee competition.
