The night couldn't have started any better for Lille as they opened the scoring five minutes into the contest thanks to a goalkeeping mistake.
Gregor Kobel made a massive mistake as Jonathan David capitalized on a cross from the left, with the Swiss goalkeeper letting the ball slip through his legs, resulting in Lille taking a 1-0 lead and 2-1 on aggregate.
Despite giving up a goal on an error from their goalkeeper, Dortmund responded with 10 total shots in the first 45 minutes while LOSC countered with six. Neither squad would score after the David goal, so the game went into halftime with the Ligue 1 McDonald's club having a one-goal advantage.
In the second half, Dortmund would turn the tables and break the hearts of Lille supporters in attendance. The German side leveled the scoring one-all in the match and two-all on aggregate.
Thomas Meunier was late and collided with Serhou Guirassy in the 52nd minute, leading to the away side receiving a penalty kick. Emre Can stepped into the box and scored the penalty with a powerful shot down the middle in the 54th minute.
Dortmund didn't take long to find the eventual game-winner as it came 11 minutes later. Maximilian Beier capped off Borussia Dortmund's dominant performance with a powerful shot that found the top corner, leaving Lucas Chevalier completely helpless.
Lille couldn't find the equalizer to push the contest to extra time and their Champions League campaign is now over. After the match, Benjamin André spoke to Canal+ to share his thoughts on the disappointing result.
"What’s disappointing is that we didn’t play. We didn’t control the ball; we lost a lot of balls, we panicked a bit at times. The disappointment came from there, we didn’t play our match."
"They, on the other hand, did. At 1-0 [for Lille], they started to push and dominate. We needed much more composure. It’s frustrating at this level. (...) We weren’t eliminated because they were far superior. We were eliminated because we didn’t play our game."
Lille lost a match at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy despite David scoring for the first time in an official competition (34 wins, eight draws).
